Boundless Connections is Heinrich Wang's first twin-dish design — two square forms joined at the center, breaking from the rounded, enclosed shapes that have defined paired dishware for centuries. The geometry opens outward in every direction, embodying the Chinese aspiration to move through the world with an open heart and wide connections. At the center, two bats face each other — in Chinese, fú (bat) shares its sound with fú (blessing), and two bats together mean blessings doubled, and two lives in harmony. Why Boundless Connections | Why This Piece

The twin dish is "hearts in unison" — the square form is "connections in every direction." The twin dish has carried the meaning of unity and mutual understanding in Chinese tradition for generations. Heinrich Wang replaced the conventional rounded form with two squares, letting the geometry itself speak the aspiration: lines extending outward in every direction, no boundary, no enclosure.

The central bats are where the modern and the traditional meet exactly. In Chinese, biānfú (bat) carries the sound of biànfú — blessings everywhere, blessings spread in all directions. Two bats facing each other mean blessings doubled, and carry the warmth of two people facing each other with affection. The motif is clean and contemporary in execution; the cultural meaning is deep and specific. This is Heinrich Wang's characteristic fusion of cultural heritage and modern design sensibility.

The minimal proportions are the result of repeated refinement. The ratio of the two squares, the scale and position of the central bats — each was adjusted multiple times before Wang found the precise balance at which a simple form becomes something unmistakably itself. The restraint is not accidental. It is the outcome of considered judgment at every stage.

創作靈感｜從器物語言讀生活哲思

Two square dish bodies are joined side by side, the overall form measuring 23.2 × 14.3 cm. The junction of the two squares forms the natural center axis of the piece, where the two bats face each other — placing the visual weight exactly at the point of connection between the two forms. The straight-line geometry gives the piece a precise, clean presence on any surface.

The dish body varies in thickness: the area around the bat relief is thicker, providing the structural support needed for the fine raised detail; the rest of the dish surface is thinner, maintaining the visual lightness of the overall proportions. This differential thickness is the result of precisely controlled high-pressure slip casting — pre-mapped before casting to prevent collapse at the relief.

Boundless Connections is Heinrich Wang's first work in the twin-dish form — a white porcelain paired dish that departs from the rounded, enclosed shapes conventional to the category, replacing them with two squares joined at the center. The geometry embodies the Chinese aspiration expressed in the phrase jié jiāo sìfāng — to build connections in every direction, to hold the world as home. At the center, two bats face each other: doubled blessings, and the warmth of two people in mutual regard. The piece is one of the most natural expressions of Wang's practice of embedding classical Chinese cultural meaning into a completely contemporary form.
