The Imperial Memories Long Set is the most visually expansive of the three. The square cup carries the series' geometric language; the long rectangular saucer extends horizontally across the table with the proportions of a ceremonial platform. Together, the vertical cup and horizontal saucer create a composed tension — and the saucer's precisely fitted cup seat ensures the cup always has a place to return to. For those who believe the act of drinking deserves a proper stage.

📌 A matching Imperial Memories teapot is also available upon request.

Why Imperial Memories Long Set | Why This Set

The long saucer is the most spatially present of the three. At 19 × 11.4 cm, the long saucer occupies the most table surface of the three Imperial Memories saucer forms. When the set is placed on a table — or a desk, or a tea tray — it commands the space around it in a way the round and square sets do not.

Vertical cup, horizontal saucer — a composed tension. The upright blade handle of the square cup and the lateral extension of the long saucer create a visual counterpoint: the cup rises, the saucer spreads. This proportion relationship is the strongest compositional statement in the Imperial Memories series.

The long flat surface is the hardest surface in the series to fire. A long rectangular flat plane is more technically challenging than a round or square flat surface — it is most likely to bow along its long axis during firing as the kiln heat distributes unevenly. Every long saucer that comes out of the kiln flat represents a precise management of temperature, clay body, and kiln positioning.

The cup seat means the cup belongs somewhere specific. The long saucer's cup seat is fitted to the base of the square cup. Each use ends with returning the cup to that position — not placing it anywhere on the long surface, but returning it to its place. The long saucer makes that return feel like a closing gesture on a stage.

The most displayable set in the series. When not in use, the long set at rest has the compositional quality of a sculptural object. On a bookshelf, a side table, or a display surface, the horizontal proportion of the long saucer with the cup at its seat reads as a complete, considered composition.

Usage Scenarios

  • 〈帝國記憶〉方杯長盤與同系列茶壺,玻璃桌上

    The solitary ritual

The long saucer spread across a desk or tea table gives a single person's drinking ritual a sense of dedicated space. This is a set for those who believe the act of drinking alone deserves its own ceremony.

  • 帝國記憶系列茶壺與多組杯盤並列

    Receiving guests of significance

Presenting the long set to an important guest establishes the weight of the occasion before a word is exchanged. The saucer's horizontal extension gives the table a formality that the round and square sets, for all their quality, do not quite reach.

  • 〈帝國記憶〉系列茶壺與方杯長盤,黑色背景

    Display and long-term presence

The long set is designed to be lived with as much as used. At rest on a shelf or display surface, the horizontal proportion with the cup at its seat creates a composition that continues to reward attention over time.

Inspiration | Reading Life's Philosophy in the Language of Objects

The proportions of the long saucer — 19 cm length, 11.4 cm width — were arrived at through repeated trials with the square cup placed at different positions on different saucer dimensions. The current ratio is the one at which the cup's visual weight and the saucer's horizontal expanse reach a stable equilibrium: the cup neither dominates nor disappears into the saucer.

The cup seat is positioned slightly toward one end of the long saucer rather than centered — a decision that gives the composition a directionality, as though the cup is about to be lifted rather than simply resting. This asymmetry is intentional and barely perceptible.

The long saucer's four corners carry the same arc resolution as the square cup's corners, maintaining the design language of the series at the scale of the largest surface.

Details

Design Concept

The Imperial Memories Long Cup and Saucer Set extends the series' design language to its most expansive form. The long rectangular saucer draws on the proportional vocabulary of Eastern ceremonial platform architecture — the horizontal base that elevates and frames what stands upon it. Heinrich Wang designed the long saucer as a stage: the cup placed at its seat is a performer at the center of a composed scene, and the act of lifting and returning the cup is the performance.

The long saucer's flat surface is the most technically demanding element in the Imperial Memories cup series — a wide, long, flat plane fired at high temperature, requiring precise kiln management to emerge without warping along its length. Each piece that comes through flat is a small technical achievement.

Usage Scenarios

The Long Set is suited to both tea and coffee. Its horizontal scale requires adequate surface space — a full tea table, a wide desk, or a dedicated display surface. This is the set most suited to long-term display when not in use. Both gloss and matte finishes are in stock.

Who It's For

Personal use: Those for whom the space given to a daily ritual is itself a statement of values

Gifting: The highest-register corporate gifting occasions — executive presentations, institutional gifts, important business relationships that deserve the most considered acknowledgment

Collecting: The long set's compositional quality and technical difficulty make it the most distinctive piece in the Imperial Memories cup series

Dimensions

Cup: L11.9 × W8.7 × H7.5 cm
Saucer : L19 × W11.4 × H3.6 cm

  • "Imperial Memories conjures a private kingdom of quiet ceremony — a stage that rises tier by tier, presiding over the most deliberate moments of solitude. To lift the cup is to begin. To return it to its seat is to close."
