Shaping the Human Spirit in White Porcelain

Heinrich Wang has long used white porcelain to explore the human spirit, the scale of objects, and how Eastern culture lives on in contemporary life. A Matter of Character continues that path, moving from the zodiac animal’s outward form into the goat’s temperament and its life within the herd — to reconsider how a person moves forward, takes on responsibility and lives alongside others.

A goat’s horns hold both an outward-reaching strength and curves that embrace; the herd stands for companionship, while its leader must find the way ahead of everyone else. Through raised heads, forward strides, leaning together and standing tall, the works take on distinct personalities.

White porcelain restrains color, returning the eye to form, outline, light and structure. Spirited, steadfast, gentle, serene — the works speak for themselves.

How to Choose a 2027 Year of the Goat Gift

Promotions and leadership

The Bellwether stands for vision, responsibility and leading the way — a fitting gift for a promotion, a new appointment or a senior colleague.

New ventures

Full Stride, Into the Wind and A Rainbow of Promise speak of direction, perseverance and new ideas — for a new business, a career change or a new chapter in life.

Friendship and lasting companionship

Entwined and Lifelong Friendship stand for understanding, support and knowing one another — for partners, close friends and long-term collaborators.

Elders and zodiac blessings

Concord, Radiant Sheep, Lifelong Friendship and Auspicious Beginning convey humility, joy, enduring friendship and harmony — for elders and mentors born in the Year of the Goat, and for 60th birthdays.

What Makes the A Matter of Character Zodiac Pieces Distinctive?

We believe a zodiac piece should do more than mark the year; it should help us see who we are becoming.

A goat can be gentle and spirited; it can walk with the herd and, when needed, be the first to find the way. Strength and softness, reason and feeling, independence and companionship complete one another, together forming the full measure of a character.

Shaping porcelain for our times is NewChi’s contemporary response to zodiac culture.

The Creative View Behind A Matter of Character

Zodiac ornaments often carry festive blessings, endearing forms and auspicious meanings. NewChi’s A Matter of Character series goes further, drawing on form, personality and life’s circumstances to give each goat piece its own spiritual theme.

When choosing, look beyond whether the recipient was born in the Year of the Goat: consider whether the leadership, conviction, loyalty or humility a piece expresses fits where they are in life right now.

That is why these works belong to more than one year. When the festivities have passed, each remains in daily life as a porcelain sculpture and a keepsake of a moment in life.

Horns and Roles: The Year of the Goat

Lead from the front, break new ground.
Healthy and striving, seeing far ahead.
Reason and feeling, strength with grace.
Life’s great play, rich with high points.

The double meaning of 角 — “horn” and “role” — is where this series began.

At different moments, we become the one who clears the way, the one who carries the weight, the one who protects our bonds, and we learn to keep humility within ambition. Through the curve of the horns, the direction of the body and the distance between figures, Heinrich Wang turns these hard-to-name states of life into white porcelain that can be seen, understood and kept for a lifetime.

Every position has its good role. What matters is knowing why you go forward, and for whom you are willing to carry the weight.

How should I choose a 2027 Year of the Goat gift?

Start with where the recipient is in life and the occasion. For a promotion or new appointment, consider The Bellwether; for a new venture, Full Stride, Into the Wind or A Rainbow of Promise; for partners, close friends and long-term collaborators, Entwined or Lifelong Friendship. For Lunar New Year, birthdays, openings, anniversaries, retirements, wedding anniversaries and corporate gifts, choose by each piece’s meaning, the recipient’s role and where it will be displayed.

Are these pieces suitable for someone not born in the Year of the Goat?

Yes. Beyond marking the zodiac year, A Matter of Character explores life themes — leadership, conviction, moving forward, humility and loyalty. When a piece’s meaning fits the recipient, the zodiac sign is no limit.

Why are “goat,” “sheep” and “ram” all used for this zodiac sign?

In Chinese, the character 羊 (yáng) refers to both goats and sheep, so the eighth sign of the zodiac appears in English as the Year of the Goat, the Sheep or the Ram — all three are correct. In this series, Heinrich Wang builds each form around its curling horns: in Chinese, 角 means both “horn” and “role,” which gives the series its name, A Matter of Character. Pieces led by sweeping horns are named for the ram; younger, gentler forms for the sheep, as in Radiant Sheep.

Why is the series called A Matter of Character?

In Chinese, the series is called 好角色, “a good role.” The character 角 means both “horn” and “role”: Heinrich Wang makes bold, exaggerated horns the heart of every piece, encouraging each of us to balance reason and feeling at home, at work and in life, and to play our own role well. The Chinese name comes from the piece 好角色, known in English as Leading Role.
